DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey today congratulated the eleven schools that participated in the “Wrap Your Own-Iowa Grown” initiative this spring that was offered through the Iowa Farm to School Program. Each of the schools received $200 to purchase locally-grown vegetables and products to create Iowa grown wraps.
“We received a great response to our ‘Wrap Your Own-Iowa Grown’ initiative and appreciate the interest from schools and students in getting more fresh Iowa produce into their lunches,” Northey said.
The schools that received funding through the program were:
Burlington School District
Cowles Montessori School in Windsor Heights
Des Moines Public Schools
Durant Elementary School in Sumner
Oelwein Community Schools
Sibley-Ocheyedan Community School
St. Mary’s School in Humboldt
University of Northern Iowa Price Lab School in Cedar Falls
Vinton-Shellsburg School District
Waverly-Shell Rock Community School
West Liberty Community School
In addition, Oelwein High School won the wrap recipe contest and an additional $300 to purchase local fruits and vegetables. The winning Southwest Chicken Wrap recipe was submitted by Barb Sanders, the school’s food service director.
The Iowa Farm to School Program coordinator recently hosted an assembly with one of Scott Smalley’s FFA classes at Oelwein High School that helped grow some food for the Oelwein Farm to School Chapter.
Josh Thompson from Price Lab schools in Cedar Falls was the winner of the Student Photo Contest for his photo “Growing Onions.” Josh received a Wrap Your Own T-shirt and his picture will be used in future Farm to School promotions.
Josh’s photo as well as photos from the assembly with Oelwein High School students can be found on the Department’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/IowaDeptofAg.
“Thank you to everyone that participated in this initiative and continues to support and enhance the Farm to School Program in Iowa,” Northey said.
