NORTHEY: STEVE MOLINE HIRED AS DIVISION DIRECTOR AT IOWA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND LAND STEWARDSHIP
Moline will oversee Consumer Protection/Industry Services and Food Safety/Animal Health Divisions

DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey today announced that Steve Moline has been hired to serve as Division Director for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.  Moline currently works as an Assistant Attorney General in the Environmental and Agriculture Law Division of the Iowa Attorney General’s office.

In his new position, Moline will oversee two of the four Divisions within the Department.  Specifically, he will oversee the Consumer Protection and Industry Services Division as well as the Food Safety and Animal Health Division.  He will start in his new position on April 1, 2011.

“Steve brings the experience, passion and knowledge needed to this position that oversees the regulatory half of the Department,” Northey said.  “These two divisions touch the lives of every Iowan.  It is these Bureaus that check the gas pumps, inspect dairy products, promote animal health and a wide variety of other tasks that are vital to the quality of life in our state.”

“I want to thank Attorney General Miller for giving me the opportunity for the past twenty years to help Iowa's farmers with legal issues they face,” Moline said.  “I am looking forward to this new and exciting opportunity and to working with Secretary Northey and his outstanding team at the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.”

Moline has worked for the Environmental and Agricultural Law Division in the Attorney General’s office since 1990.  In that position, he has dealt with many ag-law issues including: agricultural business insolvencies; hedge-to-arrive contracts; GMO’s; production contracting; and ag-related environmental issues.

Moline was born and raised on a crop and livestock farm in Pocahontas County and graduated from Rolfe Community High School.  He went on to attend Iowa State University and received a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business in 1983 from the school.  He then attended the University of Iowa College of Law and received a Juris Doctor degree in 1986.

“We have great employees at the Department and I’m confident that with Steve’s leadership we will continue to serve the people of Iowa efficiently and effectively,” Northey said.  “Steve has worked extensively with the Department in his position with the Attorney General’s office so I am confident it will be a very smooth transition to him serving as Division Director.”

The Consumer Protection and Industry Services Division includes the following Bureaus: Agricultural Diversification and Market Development; Entomology and Plant Science; Grain Warehouse; Horse and Dog Breeding Program; and Weights and Measures.  The Food Safety and Animal Health Division includes the Bureaus: Animal Industry (State Veterinarian’s Office); Dairy Products Control; Commercial Feed and Fertilizer; Meat and Poultry Inspection; Pesticide; and Iowa Laboratory.
