DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey today reminded Iowans that October is prime time to stock up on Iowa grown apples and pumpkins.
“Harvest is underway across the state and growers are reporting a plentiful supply of pumpkins and a good apple harvest with sweet, high quality fruit,” Northey said. “Fall is a great time to take a family trip to a nearby apple orchard or pumpkin patch to pick your own or to find fresh, Iowa grown fruits and vegetables at the local farmers market.”
While some states have reported a late pumpkin harvest due to the cool weather this summer, Iowa pumpkin growers have reported a great selection of brightly colored, nice size pumpkins.
Apple growers in Iowa are reporting a slightly smaller harvest than last year’s bumper crop, but orchards still have plenty of fruit for Iowans interested in obtaining freshly picked Iowa apples. Harvest time of apples varies with the different varieties, so Iowans are encouraged plan ahead to visit when their favorite variety is in its peak, or consider visiting more than once to get the freshest apples available.
Many apple orchards and pumpkin patches hold festivals or other events this time of year. Most have a store where you can get other fresh products derived from apples and pumpkins, such as homemade pies, apple butter, and fresh cider.
To help you plan for your day here are a few tips for you to help you get the most out of your trip to the orchard or pumpkin patch:
- Check the website of the farm you will be attending as there are many fall festivals occurring that will offer heaps of fun activities and entertainment for the whole family
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you aren’t afraid to get dirty in
- Bring sun gear (lotions/hats/sunglasses)
- Many farms offer drinks and snacks/food so you may want to bring a long some extra money or pack a picnic and bring your own (check with the farm before going)
Be sure and read rules of the farm and adhere to them as they are there to help keep you safe
“Visiting a local orchard or pumpkin patch is a great family activity and a way to show your children the farms where our food comes from,” Northey said.
