Think Safety, Responsibility when using Pesticides and Fertilizers on Yard
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey

Thursday, April 23, 2009

Spring is a great time in Iowa.  As the weather starts to warm farmers become very anxious to get into the field and start the process of growing a new crop to help feed and fuel the world.

Many homeowners are in a similar boat, anxious to get outside to start the annual competition to see who can have the greenest yard in the neighborhood.

Often that competition means using fertilizers to nourish the grass and pesticides to control unwanted weeds and insects.    It is vital that homeowners understand the importance of using these products responsibly and in a manner consistent with the label directions.

The term “pesticide” refers to herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and disinfectants used both on the farm and by homeowners.  The Pesticide Bureau within Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is responsible for responding to complaints and protecting citizens from misuse of the products.

In addition, education and testing on the safe use of pesticides is administered to all licensed pesticide applicators in conjunction with Iowa State University Extension.

All fertilizer products, both those used on the farm and by homeowners, are registered by the Department.  The Department also inspects, samples and analyzes commercial fertilizers to make sure they comply with the label and state regulations.  Commercial lawn care companies that apply fertilizers are also licensed by the Department.

Fertilizing is an important part of caring for plants, whether it is in your garden or part of a farm field.  Plants take nutrients from the soil, so as those plants are harvested, either by cutting the grass or harvesting the crop, those nutrients are removed and need to be replaced.  However, when there are excess nutrients being applied they can runoff and get into the state’s waterways.

Following are some common sense steps homeowners can take to make sure pesticides and fertilizers are being used responsibly and safely.

  • Read and follow the label direction when using.  It is a violation of state and federal law to use a pesticide in a manner inconsistent with label directions.
  • If you must store the products, keep them in their original containers out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Keep children and pets off the lawn following application as directed by the label.
  • Be sure to avoid drift or application onto sidewalks, driveways or streets where pedestrians could be exposed or the products can be washed in the storm sewers, which run directly to the nearest river, lake or stream.
  • Use gloves and other appropriate protective equipment when applying.
  • Be sure to communicate with your neighbors and tell them when you have applied either fertilizers or pesticides

This growing season let’s make sure we have green lawns, safe families and are protecting our state’s waterways.  Responsible use of pesticides and fertilizers can help make that happen.
