Job Description

The Chief of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s (IDALS) Pesticide Bureau is responsible to direct Iowa’s pesticide regulatory programs.   These programs entail a broad range of regulatory efforts focusing on the distribution and use of pesticides in a manner to safeguard human health, plants, crops, food, feed, water and other environmental resources of Iowa's citizens, farmers and industry workers.
The Pesticide Bureau Chief must have a strong technical background in many areas including biochemistry, agronomy and entomology.   In addition, the Pesticide Bureau Chief should be familiar with the use of pesticides in a wide range of applications including agricultural, structural and residential applications. 
Specifically, the Pesticide Bureau Chief manages a team of 7 pesticide investigators, 1 agricultural products inspector and 5 office personnel that implement the following major regulatory programs:  1. Pesticide dealer licensing; 2. Commercial and private applicator certification testing and licensing; 3. Pesticide product registration; and 4. Investigation of citizen complaints involving the alleged misuse of pesticides in Iowa.
In addition to the above-referenced major areas of responsibility, the Pesticide Bureau Chief is the Department’s representative on or advisor to several public outreach and environmental /worker protection programs.  The Bureau Chief must also work with and effectively collaborate with other local, state and federal regulatory entities.  Finally, the Pesticide Bureau Chief is responsible to manage the Department’s collection of over $4.5 million in annual licensing and product registration fees.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four year college or university and experience equal to four years of full-time professional level work in program administration, development, management or operations.

Selective Certification:  ALL applicants must meet the 006 Agriculture selective PLUS one of the following  three selectives -  317 investigations OR 449 natural sciences OR 518 physical sciences.
