Health Requirements Governing the Admission Of Animals

FARM DEER/CERVIDAE

CWD susceptible Cervidae (whitetail deer, blacktail deef, mule deer, red deer,moose, elk, and related species and hybrids) entering Iowa, other than direct movement to slaughter, shall only be allowed from herds which have satisfactorily completed at least three years in an official, recognized Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) monitoring program. All Cervidae shall be accompanied by all of the following:
a. An official certificate of veterinary inspection including official individual identification.
b. A permit number requested by the licensed, accredited veterinarian signing the certificate and issued by the state veterinarian prior to movement.
c. One of the following statements must appear on the certificate:

1. For CWD susceptible cervidae: “All Cervidae on this certificate originate from a Chronic Wasting Disease monitored or certified herd in which these animals have been kept for at least one year or were natural additions. There has been no diagnosis, signs, or epidemiologic evidence of Chronic Wasting Disease in this herd for the past five years.
2. For all other cervidae: “All Cervidae on this certificate have not spent any time within the past 36 months in a zoo, animal menagerie or like facility, and have not been on the same premises as a cervid herd which has been classified as a CWD infected herd, exposed herd or trace herd.

d. The CWD herd number, anniversary date, expiration date and herd status for each individual animal must be listed on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. All forms of identification must be listed on the certificate.
e. All Cervidae six months of age and older must be tested negative for Brucellosis within 90 days of importation, or originate from a Brucellosis certified free cervid herd.  Cervidae less than six months of age must originate from a herd which has been tested negative for brucellosis within the past twelve months or must originate from a certified brucellosis-free herd.
f. All Cervidae six months of age and older must be tested negative for Tuberculosis utilizing the single cervical test within 90 days of importation, or originate from a Tuberculosis accredited cervid herd, or originate from Tuberculosis qualified cervid herd which has been tested within 90 days of importation. Test dates must be included on the certificate of veterinary inspection. Herd status and testing protocols are according to the USDA Tuberculosis Eradication in Cervidae Uniform Methods and Rules.  . Cervidae less than six months of age imported into the state must originate from a herd which has been whole-herd tested negative for tuberculosis within the past twelve months or must originate from a tuberculosis accredited herd.

All captive cervidae native to or originating from a county or region under quarantine for tuberculosis are not eligible for entry into Iowa. Cervidae originating from an area considered to be endemic to Chronic Wasting Disease shall not be allowed entry into Iowa. Cervidae that originate from a herd that has had animal introductions from an area endemic to Chronic Wasting Disease during the preceding five years shall not be allowed entry into Iowa.
